Trafalgar Video Club to Document Teenage Methamphetamine Abuse

This year an exciting new club was launched here at Trafalgar, and its members are already busy with their first major project. Group members of the Trafalgar Video Club have decided to tackle a very challenging documentary project on crystal methamphetamine.

Students are filming, directing, editing and producing their documentary in order to educate and make an impact in the lives of fellow students. Currently, students are conducting interviews with drug officers, doctors, recovering addicts and families who have lost loved ones to drug overdoses. Using students’ perspectives, they intend to create a film that will strongly connect with other students, exposing the devastating effects of crystal meth.

The group is committed to providing the most accurate and upto- date information on crystal meth, and the Durham District Police have been vital in helping to make this happen. The Video Club would like to sincerely thank the Durham District Police Services and Chief Vernon White for their generous financial support and assistance with the project. The completed work will be submitted for consideration to the Toronto Student Film Festival in February 2007.

A Voice in the World

In October, three students represented Trafalgar Castle School at the 25th Annual International Independent Schools Public Speaking Competition (IISPSC) held at St. Andrew's College. Katherine, Amy and Harriet, competed in several speaking events during the three day competition, including After Dinner Speeches, Persuasive Speeches and Dramatic Reading. Schools from across Canada, as well as from Australia, England, Scotland, Cyprus, Bermuda and the USA, were represented. The Traf girls did a very good job in their events and enjoyed getting to know the competitors from around the world. Six students were selected at the end of the three days to compete at the World's Public Speaking Competition. Although the Trafalgar competitors were not among these six, they did an outstanding job of representing our school and letting their voices be heard. Next year's team is already preparing for IISPSC which will be held in England.

Science Women Are Terrific (SWAT)

An annual tradition and favourite event at Trafalgar Castle School is our Charity Bazaar. Here we open our doors to the community while raising much needed funds for local and international charities.

This year our SWAT club participated at the bazaar. Our team made up of students from Grades 6 through 12 worked very hard preparing for the bazaar. A lot of painting, decorating and packaging of crafts went on over many lunch hours and weekends. It was a lot of fun seeing the hard work we put into the crafts being purchased and appreciated.

This year all the proceeds that the SWAT club raised are going to World Vision, a relief and support organization dedicated to providing aid to the world’s less fortunate children.

Thanks to the SWAT members for all their hard work in making this event a success.

My Lego Robotics Experiences

“Let’s go Trafalgar Let’s Go!” was the great spirit I heard in Trafalgar Castle’s gymnasium on Saturday, November 18. It was such a fun-filled and exciting day! The preparation and work done by all three wonderful teams, Waldo Juniors, Robo Girlz and the Castle Girlz, truly paid off.

I had fun working with some of my classmates as the Castle Girlz learning how to design the very interesting Lego robots. Both the business and technical teams worked equally hard, and although there were some obstacles and tough times, we learned to get through it. With the help and support of our peers and teachers around us, we learned that not only was our goal to finish the missions but to have fun doing them and not to give up.

The tables designed by Trafalgar teams and the invited schools were dressed their best with candy, buttons and pictures galore. It truly was amazing to see all the ideas and imaginations that unfolded through the days of preparation.

Thanks to Ms. Webb and all the teachers for their help, perseverance and encouragement. All three teams had a wonderful day. Who would have thought that those colourful little bricks that my brother has played with for years could open another door to creativity. When everyone danced to the Macarena, I realized it was not just a competition; it was a rewarding experience, especially when you are doing it with your friends.

Congratulations to the Grade 7 Team Junior Waldo who came in 10th out of 40 teams in the Provincial Finals held on Saturday, December 9. We were the highest ranked all-female team.

Lego Robotics Rocks!

Faith, Grade 6
