YPI in Action
The Grade 10 Civics class is currently
involved in the Youth and Philanthropy
Initiative (YPI). This program was created as
a unique approach towards learning about
charity organizations and how they operate
in the local community. One of YPI’s main
goals is to provide financial assistance to
charitable organizations in a variety of
communities throughout Ontario. This is
where the students get involved.
The girls are required to choose one local
charity within the social service sector,
research that charity and complete a site
visit, when possible. They then prepare a
request for funding. Each student team
presents its local charity organization and
proposal to their own class. One proposal is
selected to represent that class. In a final
competition, the class teams present their
proposals on the charities they are
championing to an independent judging
panel. One of these final teams will be given
$5,000 from the Toskan Foundation to
grant to the charity they represented.
This project provides Trafalgar girls with
many unique learning opportunities as it
combines classroom learning with practical
community experience. The class will share
more information and keep you updated on
how the project is progressing.
