Student Acceptable Computer Use Policy

The following is a set of responsibilities that govern the appropriate use of technology at Trafalgar Castle School. It is the attempt of these policies to detail the general expectation that all students of the Trafalgar Castle School community use their computers and the network in a safe, responsible, respectful, considerate, and appropriate manner.

  1. Students at Trafalgar Castle School are required to purchase or acquire a laptop in order to attend at and complete the Trafalgar Castle School curriculum. Students will therefore regularly access and use the Trafalgar Castle School systems in order to carry out their work and participate in events relating to the Trafalgar Castle School community. Accordingly, whenever reasonable cause exists in the view of Trafalgar Castle School, the administration reserves the right to audit student laptops, including any external data storage medium, including but not limited to floppy disks, CDs, DVDs, USB disks/keys and digital cameras.
  2. Respect the legal protection provided by copyright and license to programs and data.
  3. Maintain secure passwords.
  4. Respect the rights of others by complying with copyright laws regarding intellectual property.
  5. Respect the rights of others by complying with the School's Code of Behaviour
  6. Respect the rights of others by preserving the privacy of personal data to which they have access.
  7. Respect the integrity of computing systems and data; for example, by not intentionally developing programs or making use of already existing programs that harass other users, or infiltrate a computer or computing system, and / or damage or alter the software components of a computer or computing system, or gain unauthorized access to other facilities accessible via the network or web.
  8. Use computing and communications facilities in a manner that is consistent with the ethical principles set forth by the School and with accepted community standards.
  9. Respect and adhere to any local, provincial or federal law which may govern use of these computing and communication facilities in Canada. These include, but are not limited to, the Criminal Code of Canada, the Ontario Human Rights Code, the Ontario Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
  10. Must not attempt to gain unauthorized access to computing installations outside of Trafalgar Castle School using the computing or communications facilities.
  11. Save their work to their school network folders on a regular basis and / or otherwise backup their data. When laptops are brought to the Help Desk they may be re-imaged and all work will be lost. Attempts will be made to save any school related work from a laptop to be re-imaged by the Help Desk staff if possible.
  12. Report any damaged or malfunctioning computing / networking equipment to the Information Technology Department immediately upon discovery to ensure prompt repair or replacement.
  13. Read, understand and conform to all regulations outlined in the more detailed Student Acceptable Use Policy document (available for download below), realizing that any violation will be subject to disciplinary action.
